Soundproof cabin for sand dredger's engine room
In the engine room on a sand dredger, owned by IHC Beaver Dredgers, five engines are used to power the ship’s pumps. The engines produced too much noise. Alara-Lukagro supplied soundproof cabins for the engine room so that the employees could concentrate and perform their jobs safely.

Engine room cabin’s properties
Alara-Lukagro designed, produced and fitted the soundproof cabin on location.
Soundproof cabin’s properties:
- High soundproof value: 111 dB outside the cabin and 68 dB inside the cabin
- Fitted with two soundproof and fire resistant doors and windows
- Fitted with vibration dampers, to absorb the engine’s vibrations through the floor
- Five removable hoisting lugs, so that the cabin can be positioned on board in one piece
- Alara-Lukagro applied preservation treatment to the soundproof cabin in-house
Creating a safe workplace on board
In the engine room on a new sand dredger, owned by IHC Beaver Dredgers, five engines are used to power the ship’s pumps. The engines produced a noise level of approximately 114 dB, an unacceptable level of exposure for employees on board the ship. IHC wanted the engines to be operated from the engine room. A significant noise reduction was necessary to make this possible. Alara-Lukagro supplied the soundproof cabin for the engine room. For the cabin’s properties please refer to the above description.
A remarkably good result
After the cabin had been installed, IHC Beavers Dredgers measured the noise level, which was 111 dB outside the cabin and 68 dB inside the cabin and referred to this as:
“A remarkably good result”
Since this project was completed, Alara-Lukagro has supplied many soundproof cabins to IHC Merwede, as a result of the agreeable collaboration and successful result.
