Vlaanderen VII - DEME

Vlaanderen VII and Vlaanderen VIII

Vlaanderen VII and Vlaanderen VIII were both constructed in 1998 and are part of the DEME Group fleet. They are so-called self-propelled split hopper dredgers. A split hopper dredger is a dredger that can split over its longitudinal axis to unload its cargo. To enable such an operation, the barge consists of two half hulls connected to each other by means of hinges at the top and hydraulic cylinders at the bottom.

On the aft deck of each ship are two pieces of Cummins KTA19 engines installed, a port side and a starboard version, which directly drive the rudder propellers. As these two engines are positioned in the immediate vicinity of the property, the desire arose at DEME Group to reduce the noise level. The enclosures already installed were not insulated. Alara-Lukagro has proposed a completely renewed set-up and an acoustically improved version of the deck units with an insulated design and sound-absorbing ventilation facilities.

Acoustic enclosures

A drop-over version has been chosen. The acoustic enclosures, including the sound-absorbing ventilation facilities, are fully prepared and composed in the Alara-Lukagro facilities. In this way, the drop-over enclosures can be placed in its entirety over the existing situation in order to minimize the assembly time on site and the non-operation of the ships.

In order to be able to deliver this customization, the situation was mapped on the basis of a measurement visit in Wedel, Germany, where the ships were at that time. The drawing work and further detail engineering are tailored to this. In consultation with the superintendent of DEME Group, the final design has been further established.

Alara-Lukagro secures the acoustic performance of the new facilities by means of initial and control of sound measurements.
